mount Carmel investigation

Mount Carmel says Dr. William Husel ordered excessive doses of painkillers for at least 34 near-death patients — 33 at Mount Carmel West in Franklinton and one at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s in Westerville.

All of the patients died, though officials said they don’t believe six of those patients died from overdoses. The health system says in all cases, family members had decided to withdraw life-saving measures.

An executive at Trinity Health, Mount Carmel’s Livonia, Michigan-based parent, has said that could mean removal of a breathing machine, often called a ventilator, or any other life-sustaining treatment needed on a continuous basis.

Attorneys representing some of the patients’ families have said they were not told about the painkillers that were administered, or consulted beforehand.
