Lane County officer-involved shootings in 2018

• Jan. 15: Robert Martinez Jr., 42, of Deadwood was shot and killed by a Lane County Sheriff's deputy outside of home in the Santa Clara area. The deputy was called to a report of a stolen vehicle. Martinez exited the vehicle with a handgun. The shooting was determined to be justified.

• June 21: An Oregon State Police trooper attempting to pull over a speeding vehicle in the Bethel area followed the suspect down dead-end Chase Street. The driver, who has never been identified, abruptly made a U-turn and drove straight toward the trooper who fired his gun in the direction of the vehicle. The vehicle, possibly a Mazda Miata, fled the scene and was not located.

• June 30: David Justo Duran, 33, of Eugene was shot by Eugene police moments after allegedly stabbing a man west of downtown Eugene. The stabbing victim later died from his injuries. Duran survived the shooting and is currently awaiting trial for murder. The shooting was ruled as lawful.

• July 12: Joey Keith Loop Jr., 40, of Cottage Grove was shot and killed by a Lane County Sheriff's deputy on a pot farm property off Row River Road. Deputies were called to the property to investigate a reported dispute with shots fired. Loop exited a building on the property and “engaged deputies with a firearm,” before he was killed. The shooting was determined to be justified.
